Achievement Gap - Summary

We live in a time where educational attainment is not only highly respected, but also a large determinant in one’s future success and socioeconomic status. It becomes imperative, therefore, that all students have equal access to not only an educational institution, but also one that offers its students a comprehensive learning experience and prepares them for further educational opportunities. Unfortunately, this often not the case. It has become a well-documented fact that an “achievement gap” exists between the attainment and academic pursuits of white students and black & Hispanic ones.

KCCJ is committed to eliminating this problem. In hopes of solving it, we think it is necessary for our political and social leaders to focus on the following issues"

  • The trend of re-segregation.
  • Increasing the cultural awareness, elimination of stereotypes, and character education taught in schools.
  • The recruitment and retention of diverse and qualified teachers.
  • The digital divide and technological equity.
  • A stronger academic curricula that includes the elimination of discriminatory standardized testing, and discourages labeling and tracking
  • We also endorse the approach taken by the NAACP to encourage federal, state and local education agencies to develop action plans detailing their strategies on closing the educational and racial divide.

In order to change the course of an unequal educational system, we must all be responsible for finding the solution.
